Santa Visits Lake Anne
From the Observer
By Sabrina Enayatulla
Dec. 9, 2005

Despite the teeth-chattering cold weather, children waited for Santa to arrive by barge at Lake Anne on Saturday, Dec. 3. Lake Anne celebrated its 40th anniversary with a rededication ceremony at noon and Santa sailed to shore shortly after.

Supervisor Cathy Hudgins, Sen. Janet Howell, (D-32) Del. Ken Plum (D-36) and Robert E. Simon, the founder of Reston, were on hand to express their appreciation for the community. The Lake Anne Village Center was originally dedicated in December 1965.

The plaza was busy as families with young children fed llamas and other animals at the mini petting zoo, drank hot cider and took pictures with Santa, DJs from Big 100.3 FM. Heidi Hansing stood in a growing line waiting for her children to join her and take their pictures with Santa. They were playing with the animals.

" They're having fun at the petting zoo, that's for sure. It was a hit," she said.
Stalls were set up on the plaza and vendors were selling art, jewelry, Christmas cakes and desserts and handbags.

Pat Macintyre with the Reston Historic Trust & Storefront Museum and the Reston Art Gallery stood outside with children making Christmas ornaments. Macintyre holds various children's craft projects on the plaza every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Body by Geoff held Kids Fun Fitness for children ages 4 to 6 and 8 to 12. Activities included relay races, jump rope, hula-hoop, kickboxing, conditioning and boxing.
