Long considered a suburban community, Merrifield is evolving into a more urban area with a town center. Already a popular residential location, further development possibilities have started taking shape here. With Interstate 495 to the east and Interstate 66 and the Dunn Lorring-Merrifield Metro station to the north, Merrifield's location is excellent.

The Greater Merrifield Business Association, property owners and other citizen groups have worked with Fairfax County to define a vision for Merrifield that takes advantage of its location and emphasizes mixed-use development.
